Santa Teresa — surf-driven, energetic, and social

Santa Teresa is a lively beach town on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula known for consistent surf, strong international energy, and a fast-moving social scene. Life here feels active and outward-facing, with days shaped by waves, workouts, and beach time, and evenings that lean social rather than quiet.

The town stretches along a dusty coastal road backed by jungle and open ocean. Cafes, gyms, surf shops, and restaurants cluster close to the beach, and much of daily life happens within sight or sound of the water. Mornings start early with surf and movement, afternoons slow briefly with heat, and nights bring people back out. Compared to Nosara, Santa Teresa feels louder, denser, and more spontaneous.

Housing spreads into the hills and side roads, and while parts of town are walkable, most residents rely on scooters or cars. Infrastructure continues to improve, but dust in dry season and mud in rainy season remain part of everyday reality.

Santa Teresa suits surfers, younger long-stay residents, and people who prefer social momentum over quiet routine. It’s less about retreat and more about participation — a place where energy builds through community, movement, and proximity to the ocean.

Learn more about living in Santa Teresa

Here's a quick look at what life in Santa Teresa feels like, from climate and connectivity to community size and access.

Weather
Energetic and social

Santa Teresa feels fast-moving, social, and outward-facing. Daily life is shaped by surf conditions, fitness routines, and a steady flow of people coming and going. It attracts residents who enjoy momentum, meeting new people, and being where things are happening.
Trade-off: if you prefer quiet evenings or predictable routines, the energy can feel intense.

Vibe
Two seasons

Santa Teresa has a dry season from December to April and a rainy season from May to November. Dry season is sunnier, busier, and dustier, while rainy season brings greener surroundings and afternoon showers. Temperatures stay warm year-round.
Trade-off: rainy season is quieter, but road conditions and humidity affect daily logistics.

Walkability
Low–medium

The town stretches along a single coastal road, with walkable pockets near the beach and central areas. Many residents use scooters or cars to move between home, shops, and surf breaks, especially outside the core.
Trade-off: convenience depends heavily on where you live.

Сost and rent
High (varies by location)

Santa Teresa is among the more expensive beach towns in Costa Rica. Prices reflect demand, beach proximity, and newer construction, with peak season pushing rates higher.
Trade-off: prime location and social access come at a premium.

Internet and remote work
Generally strong

Fiber and Starlink are common, and many residents work remotely. Reliability is usually good, but service varies by address and power stability.
Trade-off: verify exact service and backup options before committing.

Community and access
Transient but connected

The community is international and constantly changing, with strong social overlap through surf, gyms, and cafes. Services are improving, but larger errands still require planning.
Trade-off: connection is easy, but long-term continuity can be harder to find.
